ZZ Top San Diego Concert reviews
Show was rushed
On Tuesday in Glendale, I had floor tickets. The Black Eyed Peas were really good, first of all. They still have years of music to come and a great collection of hits. I really did not enjoy the show song selection for ZZ Top. They seemed determined to force the weaker songs from the new album onto us, whether we approved or not. The opening song started out pretty positive, but lost its way as it went along, much like the concert itself. The mystical enthusiasm Bono was known for seemed to have become a big show of effort, instead of the effortless performances he was known for in the past. He was starting to show his age, and, for the first time in my eyes, tired during moments of the show. The instruments' sound tended to have feedback and drowned out Bono completely at times. He was trying to captivate us with his emotion and movements, but a lot of times, it seemed there was no connection. I have seen this wonderful band 7 times now, and this was the first time I truly felt disappointed. During the show, Bono mentioned that they were trying to be intimate on a grand scale. I think they kind of failed at that. They rushed through the songs pretty quickly, which left me really yearning for the days of old when the concerts were a session of family togetherness and harmony. The Edge was tremendous as usual, as was Larry, especially during his conga playing during "If I don't go Crazy Tonight". Adam was playing an out of tune bass as usual, and Bono was as gracious as always. Still, I can't help wishing that they would play a setlist chosen by the fans, just once. Although, they did play my favorite song, "Acrobat", during the show. I was excited that they played it, just was not thrilled with the stage effects at the time. Bono really was improvising so many of the songs, which I HATED. Usually, when he does do that, it is perfectly synchronized with the vibe and all of that. Not this time though. That combined with the fast pace of going through the songs and the poor choice of the setlist really created a disjointed show, and I think a lot of people had ill feelings when they left. However, the fact that it was ZZ Top overshadowed any thoughts of disappointment. IT IS ZZ Top! Let's not forget that. I don't regret seeing them again, I just had come to expect so much more from all the great shows I have seen them perform. If they come again, you know I will be there in hopes of reaching that past level of joy. By the way, this last bit has nothing to do with ZZ Top, but it should be considered a lawful crime that an arena can charge you $20 dollars for a crappy parking spot, $8.50 for a bottle of semi-chilled Bud Light, $9.00 for a 90% sweet-and-sour margarita, then have few merchandise stands that only stock what would seem to be 20 shirts at XXL and 500 shirts at small and medium...ALL FOR FORTY DOLLARS A SHIRT!!! Talk about feeling like you have just been robbed...ridiculous!
